Reimagining Theological Community

When we think about serious theological study, we often imagine a familiar figure: the professor-theologian who reads books and scholarly articles, conducts research, writes for other scholars, teaches students, and presents papers at academic conferences.

There is nothing wrong with this model. It is an essential part of theological scholarship, and the Warren Theological Foundation is committed to supporting it. But what if our modern world is calling for more?

What if the theological community also included a stronger presence of the pastor-theologian, the physician-theologian, the lawyer-theologian, the politician-theologian, the businessperson-theologian, the educator-theologian, the artist-theologian, and countless others whose professional contexts place them at the intersection of theology and the complex realities of contemporary life?

These people may not have the time, institutional support, or professional expectations that traditionally accompany academic theological work. Yet they encounter theological questions every day. We believe these voices matter. We believe the future of theological and religious studies may depend upon creating a larger and more diverse community. But we don't want to assume that we already know what this community needs.
